If I recall, the price of a Mini in 2010 (relatively of course) was pretty reasonable. It seems to me Apple are more focused on customers in other segments and music production is not on their radar. If you still run on a 2010 Mini, then I myself would consider that pretty darned good in the scheme of computer life. The time is coming to decide which direction to go in. You do realise that a bunch of independent developers are already saying they will never support big sur ownwards right.
#Mac mini 2011 ram 16gb upgrade#
I am still running an iPad Air2 and using all the latest apps, oh nooooo, I can’t open it up and upgrade the RAM and storage, it is literally hilarious that this new hardware drops, and the single biggest meh meh moment is amount of RAM, considering the utter **** storm of crap that Catalina and now Big Sur cause for independent audio software developers. The only reason I got more life out of my Mini was b/c I could upgrade RAM and storage.7.6% of the worlds computer market, and you dont think that is a big number haha, what you think a couple of computers are sold once a week around the world. If you can't crack it open to upgrade storage or RAM - it seriously chips into ROI. The idea of blowing $1 or $2k on a Mini that will become a paper weight does not appeal.
#Mac mini 2011 ram 16gb mac#
I am a Mac Mini user for music production and just looking at researching options as its time to upgrade. I am not about to get into a cult of Mac flame war. It seems to me Apple are more focused on customers in other segments and music production is not on their radar. it also seems DAWs are becoming much more Windows friendly than ever before. Dell sell dual Xeon and dual i9 x86 based systems in a small form factor case that pack enough much to run VSL.There might be other vendors as well. but there are other players on the market that are non-OS X that are delivering small form factor systems that pack equal and more punch. The appeal of the apple mac mini in the home studio is that it's a small form factor system that packs a punch. money in toilet as you are paying top dollar for more slow RAM. you can add RAM but it's old gen slower expensive ram. but what then? i am still on a 2010 i7 mini and it runs fine but its starting to slowly show its age as you try to use some newer more processor hungry VSTs. that will probably last you about 5 to 10 years.
One option is to buy a previous generation i7 based mini. one needs to decide, do you want to stay with apple or move to windows. I think that with the release of this new mini, it has come to a cross road.
